Paths of Glory by Humphrey Cobb5/30/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Upon its publication, various critics predicted wide sales, and the Book-of-the-Month Club adopted it as its main selection for June of 1935. In April of 1934 Cobb, deciding that he was tired of his desk job at an advertising agency, sat down to write a novel in August he completed Paths of Glory. 2 While Kubrick and writers Calder Willingham and Jim Thompson have changed the focus and toned down some of his narrative’s brutality, Cobb yet remains the ultimate source of the film’s drama and of most of its ideas. However, the record of commentary on this film points up a central weakness in the “auteur” theory that credits him with primary responsibility for the film’s content 1: in discussions of what is generally referred to as “Kubrick’s Paths of Glory,” no mention is made of Humphrey Cobb’s novel, from which is derived much of the film’s power, as well as its basic story. ![]() Stanley Kubrick, who directed the film of Paths of Glory, is one of the most respected of contemporary directors, and he is certainly deserving of the praise showered on him by critics and film scholars. ![]()

The master and his emissary criticism5/30/2023 ![]() Iain McGilchrist's qualifications for his massive undertaking are ideal, perhaps unique. ![]() In other words, it makes at least an attempt to stop the excitement of first reading being grabbed and ossified by my left hemisphere. And that ‘pencilled’ (it dawned on me as I read) is important: pencil is inherently provisional, so it helps to keep the experience of the book alive. When it did, I read it in every spare moment I had, and a lot I hadn't, ending up with underlinings and sometimes manic exclamation marks pencilled onto almost every page: 462 in all, not including another 123 of small-print notes and references. ![]() I ordered my copy immediately after reading Mary Midgley's review 1 in the Guardian and waited impatiently for it to arrive. I was not asked to write this review I asked to be allowed to. ![]()

Captain blood book5/30/2023 ![]() On the whole, however, his longer works are more social drama with adventuresome elements. Rafael Sabatini, Blood’s creator, has a reputation as a swashbuckling writer and there certainly is some action to be found within the pages of his novels. Fletcher and I will explain why over the course of the rest of this article. And if they’re curious, they should probably give it a go. Many people have certainly heard of it who’ve never read it. With the exception of Treasure Island, Captain Blood is probably the most famous of all pirate stories. Now Blood isn’t remotely a fantasy figure – except in the loosest of senses – but historical swashbucklers had a huge impact on sword-and-sorcery, my favorite flavor of fantasy, so Sabatini and other writers like him are “in the wheelhouse,” if you will pardon the pun, and certainly merit a look if it’s the action and swordplay in fantasy that you most enjoy.Īlso, pirates. ![]() ![]() We made a solemn pact to compare notes and share our findings on Black Gate, which brings us here today. A few months ago, I discovered that Fletcher Vredenburgh was reading Captain Blood at the same time I was working my way through the lesser-known book-length Captain Blood story collections ( Captain Blood Returns - aka The Chronicles of Captain Blood - and The Fortunes of Captain Blood). ![]()

Nancy kress beggars5/30/2023 ![]() ![]() Horrible, boaring with zero character development If you can find the novella, read that, but skip the book. I stuck with it for a long time hoping it would go back to the great book it was in the beginning. I AM NOT ARGUING, MERELY CORRECTING YOUR FALSE STATEMENT Now the book is preachy, telling not showing, lots of talking, no depth to characters who come in and out willy nilly. Then book 2 starts and probably what she added to the original novella. I loved the whole story and was really enjoying it. ![]() How it affected her, her family and society. Nancy covered all angles of the child growing up. ![]() The story is mostly about a girl that has this done to her and her growing up. Their were also other genetic enhancements to go with this, such as increased intelligence and looks, athleticism, etc. It was all about this new genetic engineering that could make your baby never need to sleep. Nancy won a Hugo for the novella by the same name and that must have been book one here. This is divided into four books and after reading the first book, I thought I had found another go to author. THE DELIBERATELY BLIND, DESERVE NOT TO SEE ![]()

Quichotte rushdie5/29/2023 ![]() ![]() Rushdie made his name on the breathtaking originality of his 1981 novel, Midnight’s Children, the story of a boy “handcuffed to history,” born at the exact second of Indian independence. The novels are imaginative as ever, but they are also increasingly wobbly, bloated and mannered. He is the author of nearly 20 books-six published in the past 11 years alone, but of diminishing quality. “You want to be able to walk into a bookstore and say, ‘From here to here, it’s me.’”Ī shelf of books. “What you hope to do is leave behind a shelf of books,” Salman Rushdie once said, quoting Martin Amis. ![]() How do writers privately define success? Is it a matter of sales, prizes, worshipful reviews? Yes, but only that? Are there more idiosyncratic metrics-a conviction in the value of the work or in the risks taken or, perhaps, the knowledge of the cost of its creation? ![]() |
